As designers and producers, our role includes finding solutions to minimizing fabric waste. At A.Oei Studio, I've developed two upcycling methods. The first is a patch-working process where I recreate a new textile panel using fabric remnants. The second is a re-design of an existing garment.

Wedding Qipao / Cheongsam
For her wedding dinner reception, my client had in mind a modern qipao with an embroidered lace overlay. I started the project by sourcing a few different laces before selecting a 3D black-and-red floral embroidered mesh, a cranberry red silk satin for the base, and a red silk habotai for the lining.

Singapore Stories 2021
At a maritime trade gallery, 9th century Tang artifacts had been recovered from a shipwreck. Encrusted with corals, these artifacts expressed new textures that inspired the collection "Deep Sea Diving".
